Curriculum
Our aims and values underpin our curriculum. At Bright Buttons, children and their education matter most. To quote Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. We strive for each child to be the best they can be. The Bright Buttons curriculum was developed by Educational Psychologist Ingrid Green to encompass all aspects of child development. Based on developing the whole child, the curriculum seeks to develop the child spiritually, emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially.
The curriculum is a 3 year curriculum starting with children as young as 15 months old. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics and concepts, which are different and exciting for the children to learn. Some of the themes taught recently were: My body, Insects, Forest Animals, Knights and Castles, United States of America etc. Our school has Christian teachers who provide the the children with Bible lessons, stories, songs and moral instruction.
Much of the learning takes place through music, movement (kinesthetic learning), sensory and related concrete objects, which is the way children up to the age of 6 years primarily learn. This is reinforced with library books to take home, arts and crafts and baking all related to the theme and concept being taught that week. Significant time and money has been invested in toys, puzzles and library books so the each class can be equipped with the toys, puzzles and books related to the theme and concept the child is learning.
The programme includes fine-motor skills (drawing, painting, threading, cutting, pegging, etc.) and gross motor activities (balancing, climbing, rolling and outdoor play, etc.), language development (songs and rhymes, poems, etc.), auditory skills development (activity songs, story books, story CDs, etc.), imaginative play (role playing, dress-up, etc.), creative skills (arts and crafts), puzzles (which help with learning to read etc.), sensory development (sand and water play, etc.). We also like learning to occur outdoors (rare these days).
Art and Music
There are songs and rhymes related to each theme which the children learn for that term. We have nearly 200 children’s CDs. A love of music, singing and dancing is encouraged at Bright Buttons which allows children to express themselves as individuals. The children are introduced to a variety of different musical instruments and get to play them frequently. They are also introduced to a variety of different genres of music from classical to jazz to pop. Dance and movement are encouraged to allow for expression of oneself.
Music plays a very important role in a child’s life. It develops the brain and the abilities associated with it. It is advantageous for developing skills in children and also teaching them
“Music is food for the soul”, Arthur Schopenhauer .
Specialist Therapists
To meet the needs of every child in our school, we have a Speech Therapist and an Occupational Therapist available at the school to assess children who may need extra help. If the teachers feel that this is necessary it is done after consultation and in collaboration with the child’s parents.
